Scripture: Exodus 11:1-10

“Why Kill The Firstborn?”

SERMON NOTES  

Why?

• Why this awful plague? , Why did God do this?, Why kill children?, Is Yahweh a malicious God who is out for revenge?, Is Yahweh a cruel God?, Why would God go to this extreme?, Some of us struggle with these kinds of questions  

Why Is Pharoah’s Heart So Hard?

• Why is he so stubborn?, Why did Pharoah hold on so long?, Why did it take 10 Wonders for Pharoah finally let the people go free? 

Questions about the human heart are difficult to answer!  

Why Is God So Passionate For Freedom?

• Freedom and God’s desire to free people and His creation is a major theme in the Bible:  

“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” (Genesis 1:2)    

“If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything” (Exodus 21:2)  

Justice

• The 10th Wonder brings a certain amount righteous justice upon Pharoah and Egypt  

The Lamb

• Jesus, the Lamb of God, in whom the justice and especially the mercy / love of God meet  

John the Baptist: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”
