I have had the great privilege of going on 2 recent big trips:
1. The first one was a study trip with George De Jong (Under The Fig Tree Ministries) to Egypt, Israel and Jordan during the first half of May.
2. The second one was a family European vacation.
Both trips were amazing.
Here are a few things I learned from these trips:
1. Life As Gift: both journeys felt like gifts given to me. The first one was a more study tour, focusing on the connection between the text and context of the Bible. The second one was a family and personal journey. But both felt like great gifts that I had received.
2. The Importance Of History: I realize that Canada has history but the sense of history in the Africa, the Middle East and Europe seems much more real. There is so much to see!
3. How Little History I Know: now in my 40s, I feel that I should know more than I do. Going on these trips showed me how little history I know.
4. Quantity Time: sometimes we hear about the importance of “quality time.” And that is important and valid. But both of these trips taught me again the importance of quality time. Families and communities need quantity time together in order to develop meaningful friendships and relationships.
There is more I learned, but that’s good for now. Maybe more learnings later.
