A couple of days ago I celebrated 50 years of life on this earth.
50 years seems like a good time for reflection. Here are some of my thoughts:
1. 50 Years Is Old?: I used to think that anyone older than 50 was "really old." Now that I have hit that milestone how young 50 years really is.
2. 50 Years Is Young: when I compare myself to others in our church community (those in their 90s and beyond) I realize that I may yet have lots of years to live. When I see the life, energy and passion of the seniors I know I pray that God would keep me going that long with the same amount of life, energy and passion.
3. Preparing for the 2nd half: if God is going to give me 10?, 20?, 30?, 40? or more years on this earth I know that I need to make some change to my life: less sugar, less food intake and more walking / exercise. May God give me grace to do those things.
4. Convergence: someone told me recently that the decade of your 50s is your time of "convergence." Your work, vocation and gifts are all converging. You are no longer wondering what you are called to do-- you know. The 50s (and beyond?) are the time of life to fully use your gifts for the sake of God's Kingdom.
5. Thanks: I am so thankful I can celebrate my 50th birthday with friends, with our church communithy and especially with our family. 3 cheers for God's gift of celebrating with others and for a wife and kids who plan and scheme a great birthday celebration!
Giving thanks to the God who gives us life!
